“Ride of a lifetime”

Many thanks to 9-year-old Matilda Jane Gill from Carlisle, who enjoyed her recent holiday with us so much that she went into print not once, but twice, putting together a page of testimonials from family members AND a poem about her experiences. It’s lovely to hear feedback from our customers – of all ages – and we think Matilda has a promising future as a writer.

“Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness”

College Cruisers is a long-established canal boat hire company, offering memorable narrowboat holidays on the Oxford Canal since the 1990s. We recently came across two of our early press ads from Waterways World. The first, from October 1998, invites parents to “go to college” to celebrate the end of school holidays, offering “peace and solitude” aboard our “warm and cosy” narrowboats. Although our fleet has grown since those days, the basic promise remains the same. The second ad, from November 1999, describes Autumn on the canal as “such a beautiful time of year… with the rich red tints of changing

Kayaking on the Oxford Canal

The Oxford Canal is not just for narrowboats… We’re delighted to say that we’ve been able to help a couple of kayakers recently. Over the last couple of years Richard and David from Greens Norton have been paddling rivers and canals in the southeast and having fun raising money for their village pocket park. Their venture started with the River Nene to Kings Lynn and then the Thames in two major stages:  first from Northampton to Teddington (via the Grand Union and Oxford Canals) and then Cricklade to Oxford. Apparently the first Thames venture was quite tough but uneventful. However,

Cruising on the Oxford Canal 1950s style!

A recent discovery on our bookshelf gives a fascinating insight into what using the canals must have been like some 60 years ago. Cruising on the Oxford Canal was one of a series of “inland cruising booklets” published by British Waterways in the late 1950s. The booklets were designed to serve both as a general guide for canal user etiquette, and a detailed navigational guide to the stretches of canal in question. In his foreword the General Manager of British Waterways, the impressively-titled Major-General Sir Reginald Kerr extends “a sincere welcome and my assurance that you will find good companions, the

Banbury: at the heart of the South Oxford Canal

Situated at around 12 hours’ cruising from Oxford, Banbury is the turning point many of our customers aim for during a short break, and an important stop-off point for those spending a week on the Oxford Canal. Banbury is the main town of North Oxfordshire, with a population of around 40,000. It is perhaps most famous for Banbury Cross – located on a roundabout in the middle of the town – which appears in the traditional nursery rhyme… Ride A Cock Horse To Banbury Cross To See a Fine Lady Upon a White Horse With Rings on Her Fingers
